Labor Day is usually associated with backyard barbecues, the unofficial end of summer, and one last long weekend before school, football, and fall routines take over. But the holiday has a much deeper meaning. Labor Day was created to recognize the contributions and achievements of American workers. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City in 1882, and in 1894, Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday.
So this Labor Day, instead of just thinking about work, take a minute to think about what all those years of work are actually buying you. Because a paycheck doesn’t just pay the mortgage, buy groceries, or fund the next family vacation. Ideally, a portion of every paycheck is buying something much more valuable: future freedom.
That is really what retirement planning is about. It isn’t just about accumulating a certain number in a TSP, 401(k), IRA, brokerage account, or bank account. It is about building enough financial resources that eventually you can decide whether you want to work—not because you have to.
Work has value beyond the paycheck.
Every year you work gives you another year to earn, save, invest, pay down debt, build retirement accounts, increase your future pension or Social Security benefits, and prepare for the next chapter. But the purpose isn’t to work forever. The purpose is to eventually turn those years of labor into something that money can’t buy directly: choice.
Choice about where you live.
Choice about how you spend your time.
Choice about whether you take another assignment.
Choice about whether you start another career.
Choice about whether you help your kids.
Choice about whether you travel.
And eventually, choice about whether you work at all.
So this Labor Day, (hopefully) enjoy the extra day off. Fire up the grill. Watch some football. Spend time with your family.
But maybe take a few minutes before the weekend is over to ask yourself a different kind of Labor Day question: What is all this work supposed to make possible? Then take the next step and figure out what that life actually costs.
The goal of retirement planning isn’t simply to accumulate the biggest possible pile of money. It is to know when you’ve accumulated enough.
Enough to leave the job.
Enough to take the next assignment.
Enough to slow down.
Enough to travel.
Enough to spend more time with your family.
Enough to say, “I don’t have to do this anymore.”
And when you know your number, you don’t have to wonder whether you’re working because you want to—or because you still need the paycheck.
That’s a pretty meaningful way to celebrate Labor Day.
